Confidence building month

March 10, 2025

Attendings/Residents/Students (lifestyle, criticism, aura): Dr. Macsuga is exactly the kind of doctor i want to be when i begin practicing. She is not only incredibly kind and willing to teach, she allows students and residents to be very hands on in the OR and is happy to answer any question you might have.

Didactics: Usually Tuesday mornings. At the end of the month the student will present. Also had a journal club held at a nice restaurant, during which they had me and a couple of the residents present. One of the more academic programs i externed at, but not overwhelming. majority of pimping came from the younger attendings.

OR Experience: Was in the OR almost every day. tons of hands on experience. Also had us rotate with a orthopod who was very willing to let the pod residents get involved. cool to see it from that perspective

Clinic Experience: was only in clinic a few times throughout the month, usually at Dr. Taylor’s (program director) private practice, or at their PGY1 clinic.

Research Opportunities: they’re there if you want them, but not required

City Life: grand blanc is a small little town but there is plenty to do in the surrounding cities. relatively easy drive to suburban detroit.

Favorite Part: Dr. Macsuga is a huge asset to this program, as well as Dr. Truby (PGY3). both are very impressive surgeons as well as wonderful people to spend your month with. if you were a nervous student like i was (it was only my 2nd externship) they will absolutely build your confidence and make you feel welcome.

Constructive Criticism: Some of the surgery days were pretty long, multiple days in a row but if you’re into a heavy surgical program this is absolutely the place for you if you can adjust to the smaller town living.

My favorite this far

July 29, 2023

Attendings/Residents/Students (lifestyle, criticism, aura): attendings were pleasant! Dr. Macsuga was impressive and a great leader and teacher! I was the only extern for the month and felt extremely comfortable with all the attendings and residents! Jessica Hoffstatter and Hussein Bazzi were super helpful, kind, and professional!

Didactics: didn’t have a journal club during the time I was there but they typically do one each month as well as case study/presentations each week! I was expected to do one over a topic of choice at the end of rotations

OR Experience: OR experience was mostly the second or third scrubbed in! It was a great learning experience and I was able to get some hands on experience

Clinic Experience: not much clinic experience which was okay for me! Since I was the only extern I think they just got me in the cool cases

Research Opportunities: none! Which was good by me

City Life: the city life is very simplistic and minimal it’s in a small city outside of flint and Detroit which was okay for me

Favorite Part: the residents and the interrelationships between the team! Also the ascension genesys athletic club was nice

Constructive Criticism: relationship with ortho

Great Program

February 7, 2023

I thought the directors and current residents were knowledgeable. I would recommend this to people that do not mind the area and just want a good residency experience

Great but small city vibes

February 7, 2023

It was a great experience I felt as though I was a bit unprepared for all the surgical expectations. A bit too small of a city for me!

Hands on and appropriate

February 7, 2023

I thought this program was very hands on! It had a cool cadaver lab although I wish we had more time it was still pleasant. They do expect a lot from you but I loved that! 10/10
