this program has a lot of problems (some good tho)

November 10, 2023

Attendings/Residents/Students (lifestyle, criticism, aura):

2 residents each year as an extern i noticed that pgy1s do all the run around (ridiculous amount)as the other sit back and watch

-multiple residents scrub in each case so as an extern I was 4th scrub or more

-residents got to do the procedure with a lot of direction

-pgy3s and 2s were okay but were not as good surgically for the numbers that they get in I think it is due to the micromanagement

-Barry students (MS3s) are with you most of the time

-Dr. H and Dr. Williams are the only reason why this program has not completely set up in flames however they are also apart of the problem

-residents also do all the dictations and do not seem to get days off despite not really having obligations outside of rounding, and waiting on cases

Didactics: Monday and Tuesday each week for about an hour but it was also filled with drama talk amongst the podiatry or other sub specialties so if you are into that… however when we did get to do actual academics it was good.

OR Experience:

-i was hardly impressed, the hospital itself was slow on turnovers, some attendings show up whenever they want and the residents were okay at doing the procedures. the pgy1 i was with was with was second scrub for nearly all cases

Clinic Experience:

-None

Research Opportunities:

-May be oppurtunities with Dr. Williams as she is big time in south florida

City Life: Never got to enjoy much time here as we worked 7am-7pm except for weekends, miami is gorgeous wish i chose another florida prgram that gave some more time for me to explore

Favorite Part:

-miami

-Dr. H and Williams

-josie a pgy1 i worked with over the month (however she did not get the help she needed from co-residents)

Constructive Criticism: The program gets to see a wide range of surgical cases and the residents do work together well in the OR however work should be divided up better. Some residents need some days off as they look burnt out. They do not do a lot of clinic so if you are looking for exposure to cases with two great attendings to work with (others were garbage) in a wonderful area then this is it, outside of that i was not heavily impressed.

They allowed us to scrub in, suture, and retract during surgical procedures. The environment with nice and it had a warm atmosphere to it. We saw a lot of diabetic cases and wound care. I would recommend this program as it allowed you to be as hands as you were comfortable with being.

Learning curve

January 30, 2023

They allowed scrub in during rotation and to throw some sutures. Although it was demanding it was a great experience. The directors are great and I learned something new each day. I thought at times it had a somewhat “sorority” vibe to it that made it difficult at times as they would at times come off as condescending. I did not have duties on the weekend, so it was nice for adventure. Overall a pretty great program for learning experience.
