Low surgical #s and all day clinics

March 12, 2025

I’m a current first year resident.

This program does NOT currently have the surgical #s to graduate 3 residents per year!!!

Also residents are held in private clinic, all day, everyday except for off service rotations – this far exceeds the limit set under CPME 320. The way this program differs from most podiatry programs is that most of us get placed in private clinic and not at the institution that has employed us (lower bucks hospital).

First years are specially overworked in private clinic.

There are 4 attendings; they are all knowledgeable but I enjoy working with one attending who loves to teach… that’s the part that I can appreciate.

Attendings/Residents/Students (lifestyle, criticism, aura):

3 main attendings and a lot of others (but not as involved)

Boc- Very smart and experienced and lets you learn completely hands on. Has a lot of experience however will only share if you ask and are willing to learn. Lots of clinic and enjoys didactics.

Lopez- Likes things done very particular. Was trained under Boc. ALSO not a lot of surgical load (you are already seeing the problem at program). A bit of an A type so just uphold good sterility and present using correct clinical vernacular. Allows you to do hands on soft tissue but not so much osseous work if he is not confident in your ability.

Giagnacova- interesting character and fun to work. Mostly the inhouse podiatrist. Does a lot of flaps, wound care, and complex closure. Enjoys literature and research. A little off the cuff but allows you to do a lot of the work that you are comfortable with.

Burton: real cool old school doc that brings a lot of experience. 1 surgery a month is all and no clinic otherwise.

Hennessey: newly graduated attending from LBH. Good skills and surgical ability to learn from. He has not been an attending long so not much information yet.

Didactics:

Every Friday. Long, boring, not well done, something new and changing hopefully, once a month rep will break up the monotony. Essentially each resident spews out some info and it still somehow drags out for the rest of the day 2-3 hours.

OR Experience:

Thursday and Friday mornings (boc and lopez) and sporadically throughout the week (G) whenever we do have cases it is a great experience, as long as you are prepared you get to do the entirety of the procedure. This is the BEST. Only downside is that surgical load. Ranges from 0-6 procedures a week give or take. Lots of I&D flaps, ankle arthroscopes, rearfoot, not as much forefoot as i expected. If more surgical load than program would be a 5/5.

Clinic Experience:

Lots of clinic throughout the week. M-F you get to code, and do nearly all so very hands on. This is good and you are expected to book surgeries when the oppurtunity presents itself and if attending agrees then the case gets booked. Coding experience is plentiful however no training you just learn as you go. Down side however some days are half dependent on schedule and hospital obligation.

Research Opportunities:

Dr. Giagnacova does research every year if interest is presented. He already has plenty of ideas. Just wants participation, however it is not really mandatatory.

City Life:

Bristol is a small town outside of philly (45min). Completely ideal for me, small familiys, or anyone that does not want to be in a big city. Kind of expensive but avoid philly city tax, close to the pocanos trails if you like the nature and situated close to the delaware river

Favorite Part:

Hands on experience, hours required to work (good hours~
