UH

March 26, 2025

Attendings/Residents/Students (lifestyle, criticism, aura): The residents overall are laid back. Students from KSUCPM do rotations here during third year. It’s a busy program but lots of driving is required.

Didactics: monthly journal club. free food

OR Experience: lots of forefoot. Mostly MIS bunions and hammer toes. I saw rearfoot cases on the schedule but apparently UH has rules about which hospitals students can scrub at. One resident really knew what she was doing in the OR, and the other was just ok. they have a good case volume.

Clinic Experience: mostly private practice. Good opportunity for clinical experience.

Research Opportunities: not sure

City Life: it’s Cleveland. Good food, not much else.

Favorite Part: the attendings and residents like to teach. I didn’t feel like I was just in their way.

Constructive Criticism: way too much driving. Disappointed that I couldn’t go to the TAR case and actually see what rearfoot surgery is like here

So much driving I think I was going 40miles each way all the time… would not recommend.

decreasing the resident spots I believe…. but I was not impressed with the current residents as I do not believe they were given enough exposure needed..

Low/mid tier program that is going through growing pains at the moement

General Program/Hospital Info: University Hospitals Regional Hospital Networks

Attendings: Dr Fry, oltmann, glukh, pratt, rizzante, many more

Residents: 5

Didactics: Journal club every wednesday

OR Experience: Lots of forefoot stuff, little rearfoot especially due to a few attendings who have left the program recently. Will most likely need to do a fellowship if you really want to get good at rearfoot stuff. You will get your numbers but you do not see a lot of post op. There is 1 orthopod you rotate with .

Clinic Experience: Lots of opportunities for clinical experience. You rotate in a few private practices and you will be well versed in conservative care and practice management

Research Opportunities: Not really unless you were to start your own project

Lifestyle: Cleveland is a great city to live in and very cheap. Residents do a lot of rounding and take a lot of call. You still have time to life a fairly comfortable life tho.

Pros: Lots of forefoot stuff. You will be well versed in bread and butter podiatry cases. Pratt and Rizzante are fantastic attendings.

Cons: Not a lot of rearfoot stuff. The program has changed directors 3 times in the past 3 years so that should tell you something. Dr Frey who is the new director seems to be a little in over his head. Does not really communicate with his residents. Lots of the very experienced older attendings left the program due to their disagreements with him. The program is going through a lot of growing pains and is in need of some real direction.

Overall Conclusion: The future of this program is not looking good. There are some good attendings and you can get good training if you really are proactive. But in all honesty this program is a big time work in progress
